The main city gate (Altpörtel)
One of the tallest and most important city gates in Germany. Its lower sections were constructed between 1230 and 1250. Fantastic view from the top storey.
Maximilian-Street
Also called `via triumphalis´formes the centre of the town and connects the main sights – the cathedral and the main city gate. Beautiful buildings in Romanesque and Rococo style invite to promenade, to go shopping and to enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere of Speyer.
The Old Mint
In the Middle Ages the house of the coiners, was replaced by the construction of the “New Departement Store at the Market” in 1748. Until the 19th century it served as an exchange of all trade and business activities on the Rhine.
The City Hall
is representative of late baroque architecture and was erected between 1712 and 1726.
The Memorial Church
Built to commemorate the protest at Parliament carried out by the protestant estates of the Empire: The Memorial Church was built between 1893 and 1904 in the Gothic cathedral style. The organ and the series of glass windows are particularly worth viewing. In the decorative programme of the rose window, the protest is linked with events from the Old and New Testaments.
The Jewish Court
Established before 1128 is the oldest Mikwe (bath complex for ritual cleansing) of its kind in Germany. It has an approximately 33 feet deep well. The eastern wall of the adjacent men’s and women’s synagogue are also in good condition.
The Trinity Church
The church was constructed as a Lutheran church during the years 1701 to 1717. It was modelled after St. Katherine’s church in Frankfurt. Its interior has a richly painted wooden vaulted ceiling, and wood carvings on the pulpit, altar and galleries which in fact are remarkable.
Hasenpfuhl
The former dwellings of the fishermen were carefully restored and well appropriate to surcease.
The Cathedral of Speyer
A Romanesque basilica founded by the Emperor Conrad II in 1030. It was consecrated in 1061. It is one of the largest and most impressive Romanesque edifices in Germany. The size of its tall arcades outmeasures all other structures built in the 11th century. The crypt deserves special attention since it is preserved in its almost unaltered original condition. The Cathedral contains the tombs of eight German emperors and kings, and several bishops. In 1981 the church building was added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage.
The Historical Museum of the Palatinate
Collections and artefacts from the Stone Age to the present can be seen, also the Cathedral Treasure, the Wine Museum and changing exhibitions.
